Frequently
Asked Questions
It’s natural to have questions before starting hypnotherapy. You’ll find here answers to some common hypnotherapy questions, how sessions work at Chris Urquhart Hypnotherapy, what to expect, and how hypnotherapy can support positive change.
Can anybody be hypnotised?
Anyone can be hypnotised. Hypnosis is based on accessing the " trance state" which is a natural, safe state. People go into a trance in everyday situations such as being engrossed in a television show or movie, getting lost in a good book, dancing, listening to music or daydreaming. When in the trance state people become "highly suggestible" (this is exactly why television and radio advertising is so effective).
Hypnosis takes it one step further and utilises your "natural state" combined with specific suggestions tailored to each person's unique requirements to create lasting change.
While in "hypnosis" you have awareness of your surroundings and you retain full control of yourself at all times.
Hypnosis is not sleep. Clients maintain self-control throughout the session. The state is one of deep relaxation and inward focus.

Does the therapist control me during hypnotherapy?
The hypnotherapist does not control the client in hypnosis. The relationship is a collaborative one where the therapist offers suggestions that align with the client's aims for the session and only those specific aims.
When these suggestions are given while the client is in the trance state, and used as part of a holistic approach which includes psycho-therapeutic techniques from the field of Neuro Linguistic Programming ( NLP ) the result is rapid and lasting change.

Can hypnosis be dangerous?
There are no dangers specific to hypnosis. There are some specific medical conditions that hypnosis is contraindicated in. People diagnosed with any/all seizure disorders are excluded from hypnotherapy. Bi-polar disorder is another condition as is schizophrenia and any condition related to these.
It is always important to check with your primary care physician and/or psychiatrist if you have been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition prior to engaging with a hypnotherapist. A medical certificate is essential for alcohol cessation hypnotherapy as is for stopping benzodiazepines. This is because the withdrawal from these two drugs can be fatal.

Is it possible to become stuck in hypnosis?
People can't become "stuck in hypnosis". Some people are capable of entering a very deep state of trance very quickly and will sometimes remain deep (but not stuck) for the duration of the session. Everybody returns to normal waking consciousness after the session finishes.
Can hypnotherapy be used while I am on medication?
If you are on medication you must consult with your doctor/ primary care physician and take their advice. A medical certificate is required before hypnotherapy commences for everybody who is on prescribed medication.
